3 Best Methods For Attracting Ladybugs To Your Garden

   (Read 500+ times)
By Steve Habib

The ladybug is an adorable insect we’ve all seen and handled as children. The pattern of orange and black dots made them as cute as can be. If you gently pick one up it would crawl up your arm and fly off into the air. Depending on your upbringing, some believe they are a symbol of good luck. But whoever thought such a cute bug could be an effective predator in your garden?

The ladybug is a Ladybird Beetle. The ladybug is well known for having a big appetite for many soft-bodied insects including whiteflies, mites, and their favorite aphids. You want these colorful bugs hanging around your garden.

3 Methods Of Attracting Ladybird Beetles:

Method # 1:

To begin with, just having aphids on your plants and crops will attract the predators to your garden. Apart from this fact, selecting certain plants will magnetically draw the insects to your garden. The bugs seem especially attracted to umbrella shaped flowers. The herbs cilantro, dill and fennel fall under this category. Other plants include dandelions, white cosmos, and fragrant geraniums.

Method #2:

Go organic. What I’m talking about here is the decline, or better yet elimination of chemical sprays and potions. These insect killing sprays do work. Not only will they kill unwanted insects, but they also will kill ladybug and other good insects. The chemicals also kill ladybug eggs and poison their food supply. This creates an environment that no bug in his right mind would want to live in. It is best to not to use any bug sprays on plants and flowers.

Method 3 #: Buy Yourself Some Ladybugs:

It is possible even though you have the right kinds of plants, don’t use chemicals and have an aphid infestation ladybugs still won’t find their way to your property.

What are you to do?

A visit to your local gardening center or a search online will give you the opportunity to buy live ladybugs. They are often sold 500-1000 per container and are inexpensive.

When you buy live ladybugs they often come with instructions. Included here are a few tips to keep in mind. First, buy some ladybug food (Wheast). The food will keep the bugs hanging around should they run out of aphids. Second, release them after dusk and before dawn. And finally, water your garden before releasing them so the bugs can quench their thirst.

The nice thing about these orange and black insects is they cause no harm to your garden. They remove the need for insect sprays and encourage future generation to call your garden home.
