A Garden May Help Fight the Recession©

   (Read 250+ times)
By Arlene Wright Correll

For those of us less fortunate to have the fruits of our labors from a large vegetable garden this year we are now starting to feel the pinch of high prices in our local food markets.

As a kid I remember Eleanor Roosevelt starting the Victory Garden program in 1943 against the protests of the U.S.D.A. who thought those efforts was going to be the down fall of the American Food industry. Well it wasn’t even though over 20 million victory gardens were supplying over 40 percent of the produce consumed on the home front in the United States.

With this in mind perhaps it is time for Americans, whether they live in the country or even in the cities, to seriously think about starting a recession vegetable garden this spring. For those of us who live in warmer climates a vegetable garden may be something to think about starting now.

No space? Think again because containers or hanging planters or hanging bag planters are workable alternatives for many vegetables including tomatoes.

Personally, myself, I would appreciate those who rip out their lawns and replace them with vegetable and flower gardens. However, many people live in subdivisions where that would probably be against local zoning or community by-laws. So consider doing something in the rear of your home.

Gardening gives one a strong feeling of commitment to our planet, it helps with the ecological balance, and it ensures that your family and you are getting wholesome, organic produce providing you are not lambasting your soil with chemically enhanced fertilizers.

Gardening keeps one fit especially if you are on the weeding detail. It gives you a good daily dose of the vitamins you need from normal sun exposure and remember the sun blocker and a good wide brimmed hat when working outside because one never wants too much of a good thing.

Should your vegetable garden become a mega producer then you can freeze, can or dehydrate your harvest for the coming winter and save lots of your hard earned dollars. Also you can share your extra produce with those less fortunate, or trade it to others for things they might have that you want or need.

Becoming a self sufficient gardener has its benefits just in case of food shortages and those of you reading this may think I am daffy to mention it, but it can happen even in this country.

These are changing times and changing times require changing minds. I have lived through the tail end of a major depression and 3 recessions in my life time in this country. A recession lasts at least 2 years. So don’t depend on “Big Brother” to help you out. Help yourself out and it may start with a recession vegetable garden.

“Tread the Earth Lightly” and in the meantime… May your day be filled with…Peace, Light and Love,
