Tires are an important part of the riding lawn mower. Anyone who has a large lawn will know how much easier life is with the right kind of lawnmower. A riding lawn mower is the choice for most gardeners in this case, but the lawn mower will need maintenance. Getting to and from your lawn may involve a bit of rough riding, which plays havoc with the tires, and sooner or later they will need replacing. It is important to make sure that a decent tire is chosen as a replacement, a cheap poor quality tire is a false economy; they will just wear out quickly and need replacing too often.
Types of riding lawn mower tires
If you are replacing your tires because you hit something hard, check that you have not damaged the wheel rims. You may need to consider replacing the riding lawn mower tires and wheels at the same time; new tires will not fit over bent rims. There are three basic types of tire, ribbed, slick and lawn tires. The types of tire you choose will depend on the wear and tear you expect your tires to experience, the size, and terrain of your garden. Before you buy your tires, check the size, measure your existing tire. The smooth or slick tire minimises turf damage and is fine for very flat surfaces where little traction is required. Next up is the turf saver tire, so called because although it has reasonable traction, the tread is designed to minimise pressure on the lawn. An alternative is the rib tread tire which is a very heavy duty semi-pneumatic tire. If you want to aerate your lawn you can buy spiked lawn tires which enable you to ride over your lawn, spiking it as you drive.
Sources of riding lawn mower tires
These are a product widely available on the Internet and at good prices. Make sure you get the measurements absolutely correct if ordering online, or take your old tire to your local tire depot and they can replace it. Several lawn mowers can use the same tires, e.g. Murray riding lawn mower tires which are Carlisles and can also be used on John Deere mowers. The stockists on the internet will give you an idea of price, then when you have found the kind of tire you need, you can use a comparison site to find the best deal. The only other thing to consider when buying riding lawn mower tires is that it is better to replace them two at a time so that you get an equal distribution of tread either at the front or the back.
