Choosing the right tiller
Many gardeners make the mistake of looking at tillers before looking at their garden, and they get carried away by the sales talk and the features, ending up with a tiller that is too expensive or too big or small for their particular garden. The advice is to start with your garden, write down what you want the tiller to be able to do, then research available tillers before going anywhere near a showroom. Some rotary tillers cross over between garden and farm use and many manufacturers produce machines for both markets. If you are using a tractor to till your ground, it is very important to select a tiller that is matched to your tractor horsepower or you risk damaging the rototiller by running too much power through it. If possible, select a tiller whose width matches that of your tractor if you have enough horsepower to run it. Alternatively, get a tiller that is as wide as your tractor tire centers. A good dealer will not sell you an unsuitable tiller, and the Maschio tiller range makes it clear as to the suitability of each of their machines.
Types of tiller
Size is not the only consideration; there is a personal preference for how to till your garden, which depends upon the gardener. A garden's soil will also influence the choice of tiller. For example, a rocky, hard soil may need a more heavy duty tiller, and a long, narrow plot will need a matching suitable tiller width. The Maschio tiller range is available as four or six tine flanges and widths from 35 inches to 100 inches. The 4 tine Maschio E120 is suitable for light duty tilling, up to 35 HP. The next model of Maschio tiller recommended by many dealers is the Maschio NC which has 6 tines per flange, works up to 50 hp and would be suitable for most medium duty work. Maschio have a variety of heavy duty tillers going up to 100 Hp and beyond, but your average gardener would find a light duty or medium duty tiller sufficient to their needs.
Buying your Maschio tiller
There is a full range of Maschio tillers available from the farm and gardening equipment dealers, but there is also a thriving second hand market. You can buy a Maschio tiller on eBay and at auctions, and there is also a strong trade in Maschio tiller parts, at farm shops and from service centers. If this is likely to be your first Maschio tiller purchase, check out the forums where there is a lot of advice and guidance from gardeners and farmers who use and maintain Maschio rotary tillers across the range.
