Abelia Care – 3 practical tips for glossy green foliage and Year-round fragrant flowers

   (Read 500+ times)
By Steve Habib

The Abelia is a popular shrub that can grow to a height of six feet tall. During the dog days of summer and cooling months of fall, little bell-shaped flowers develop into clusters at the tips of its branches and leaves. A clue the shrub is about to blossom are the presence of butterflies.

Bees and butterflies are drawn to the perfume like fragrance of its white and pink flowers. During autumn, the shrubs glossy dark green leaves change to a purplish bronze/red color. Caring for the Abelia shrub is not all that difficult. Let us look at a few growing tips to help you along.

Tip # 1: Soil Needs:

The Abelia shrub will thrive with a high amount of organic matter. Worm castings, peat moss, leaves, grass and other organic material are all good additions to the garden area. Good drainage is important for the plant roots and overall health. Soggy soil can trigger root rot and other fungus disease.

Tip # 2: Climate needs:

This shrub can be grow in USDA zones 6 a to 9 b. Check your grow zone before planting outdoors. It will do best when placed in full or partial sun. If grown in a container indoors, you will need to keep in a brightly lit location.

Tip # 3: Fertilizer Needs:

There are plenty of organic fertilizers that can be applied to this plant. Worm casting, bat guano, fish meal, and manure to name a few. A slow release fertilizer will do the trick as well. Check your local nursery for recommendations.

Tip # 4: Pruning Needs:

The best time for pruning is immediately after a flowering cycle. Regular pruning is necessary for good health and steady growth. Prune off any dead or damaged stems, leaves and branches.

Blooming Times:

Typically the shrub flowers beginning in summer to early fall. However, it is not uncommon for its flowers to appear multiple times a year. They are bell-shaped and are pink or white. The flowers are tiny but so plentiful they are still eye-catching.

If you are looking for an attractive shrub needing low maintenance look into buying an Abelia. Its beautiful foliage, dainty pinkish white flowers, and fragrance are sure to catch the attention of friends and neighbors.
