Acer Palmatum Orange Dream

   (Read 500+ times)
By Patricia Wainwright

Japanese maples (acer palmatum) are some of the most beautiful, ornamental trees available. There are hundreds of species of Japanese maples in a variety of sizes, colors, and shapes. One of the newer species is known as Acer Palmatum Orange Dream. It is a relatively new cultivar and is a striking and unusual addition to the Japanese maple family.

The Acer Palmatum Orange Dream species is a small shrub-like tree. It belongs to the dissectum category of Japanese maples. This means that it produces fragile looking lacy leaves that “cascade” from the main branches. These leaves actually change colors from spring to summer to fall. It produces light green leaves with a distinctive reddish-orange rim in springtime. The leaves turn all green in the summer and turn again in the fall to a vivid orange or golden color. Another unusual characteristic is its bright green bark that provides a unique backdrop for its gaudy foliage. The Orange Dream is a slow growing species, and will typically only add two or three inches per year. Ultimately, it will reach heights of 10’ – 15’ with a compact 8’ – 12’ canopy.

Acer Palmatum Orange Dream is a very versatile species. Its small size and slow growth make it ideal for bonsai cultivation or container planting. It can also be used as an ornamental tree within your landscape. Its bright leaf and bark colors make it stand out from its background. Consider planting the Orange Dream against an evergreen backdrop to make the colors truly pop. Or, plant a row along the drive or sidewalk for a blaze of color in all seasons.

Orange Dreams are extremely hardy Japanese maples. They tolerate heat and humidity well, and will thrive in southern regions as well as more temperate climates. This tree prefers an acidic soil, but will thrive in any well-drained soil. It prefers dappled or partial sun. The tree is compact and only requires pruning to restrict growth or to remove damaged branches. Once established, the Orange Dream is hardy and virtually maintenance free.

Most Japanese maples provide a distinctive and vivid focal point for your landscape or container garden. Even among its showy cousins, Acer Palmatum Orange Dream stands out. Its unusual green bark, lacy foliage, and vivid colors are not like any other ornamental tree. Add in its tough, low maintenance nature, and the Orange Dream will be a welcome addition to any lawn or landscape.
