Backyard Garden Design

   (Read 100+ times)
By Patricia Wainwright

If your backyard is looking drab and boring, it may be in serious need of a makeover. Take a few minutes to read this article on backyard garden design, which will tell you how to enhance the space you have available to make the most of your back yard.

The first thing you should take into account when thinking about your backyard garden design, is its size and shape. Draw a quick map of your garden, and include all the elements that cannot be changed or moved... the swimming pool, patio, garden sheds or other structures... once you have that, the idea is to work with that in order to improve your garden. After that, include any big trees, shrubs or plants that are there and you would not like to have removed. Once this step is done, you are ready to start with your backyard garden design.

Remember that a good backyard garden design includes a variety of elements, that all these elements should be balanced and that there shouldn`t be too many of them, especially if the garden is not so big. Think about things you would like to have, say, for example, a garden bench. Where would you place it? What would be the best position for it in order to enjoy the best view of the garden? Once you have answered these questions, include your garden bench in your backyard garden design. Think of other elements... a good water feature for example.

Would you like to include a water feature in your garden? Just sketch it in. Remember to keep elements well-balanced; do not overdo things when planning your backyard garden design. Play a bit with the ideas; imagine how they would work out in your own garden. Think of including elements such as sculptures, planters, tables and seats, hammocks, fountains or other water features... the list is endless... and fascinating. Thinking about a general concept for your garden will also be of help. What style do you want it to have? Do you want it to be more functional than ornamental, or the other way around?

Once you have answered all these questions, start thinking about what plants you can include in your garden to accompany the decisions you made in the previous steps. Plants are the soul of the garden so special attention should be paid to this point when planning your backyard garden design. Perennial plants can be used to create contrast in different seasons... think of how the plant will look in the different seasons, think of colors and shapes, flowers and smells, and try to incorporate all that into one well-thought-out garden design.

Many people find that it is very difficult to draw or even do the simplest sketch. If this is your case, there are a great number of programs designed to make garden design easier. There are paid programs (some of which can be extremely expensive) and simpler, free download software options for beginners. You could try one of this is drawing is not your thing! Give backyard garden design a try!
