Best methods of growing and caring for the colorful Croton Plant

   (Read 500+ times)
By Steve Habib

Popular for its bright foliage colors, the Croton plants belong to the Codieaum family, a variety of plants mostly used as household plants. At times, many people have mistaken this plant to be exotic and of tropical origin because of the presence of multiple colors.

Its leaves are thought to have been covered in wax because they naturally point upward. Such characteristic makes the Croton plant unique. In order to make it healthy, it is recommended to take care of it properly.

Caring for the Croton Plant

Sunlight is very important. However, it should not be direct. Moderate heat from the sun is sufficient. Also, it needs the right setting on the area’s temperature. To keep the leaves from withering, humidity is needed. Dry climate should be avoided as possible.

If other plants thrive on scanty watering, the Croton is different. It needs good amount of water every day. The plant should be situated in loosely compacted soil with good drainage.

If it is planted on pots, the pots must have holes on their bottom parts to ensure that water has a way of exit. This way, the excess water is sure to drain away, and the soil remains moist but not overly saturated.

Misting with spray bottle is also ideal to keep the plant moist. Misting can be done once or twice a week, particularly when the weather is drier.

The frequency of misting should be increased in areas where humidity is low. Watering ensures healthy growth. If the leaves become droopy, it is an indication that the plant needs more water. The leaves then will start to fall off from their leaves.

On the other hand, overwatering Croton is not good. A sign that Croton is over watered is when leaves are wilting. If Croton is placed indoor, it is imperative to keep the temperature high, specifically around 80 degrees Fahrenheit.

Having such temperature will ensure that Croton will have the best of its colorful foliage. Caring for this plant is not difficult. The tips are easy to follow.

The most important thing you need to know is its water needs. If the leaves still keep on falling despite its sunlight exposure, it may need water. Also, you may pluck the dry leaves from their stems.

Croton is a poisonous plant. For everyone’s safety, it is best to keep it on a place where children and pets are not able to reach and nibble on them.
