We all know the benefits of birds in our gardens and how they eat the bad bugs, plus we also know that they eat some of our berries and I personally know that they help to clean out the plums in my plum trees that are now almost 2 stories high and I don’t go up on ladders any longer in my old age so that is fine by me.
Birds, like us, need water each day and they cannot rely on rain as we have noticed that we cannot rely on it during these two drought filled summers in our region. These feathered friends need our help.
However, many bird baths are expensive so let’s consider some that are not and you may even have some of the things you need to make a 5 minute bird bath right in your gardening shed. You will need one terra-cotta pot and a terra-cotta saucer. Have at least a 12 inch pot or a 16 inch pot. Choose the spot you want to put your bird bath. Take your pot and overturn it in that spot and then set the saucer on top on the overturned pot. Next fill the saucer with water to attract the birds and you have an instant, affordable bird bath.
To make some mini bird baths that are quite colorful I found some old 10 cent cups and saucers at a flea market. I drilled some holes in the bottom of the cups and saucers. I then painted them with some good exterior latex paint and next painted on some wild flower designs.
I was able to find some threaded rod about 3 feet tall at my local hardware store. I bought the appropriate nuts for them.
I now aligned my cup and saucer holes and put a dab of good exterior glue on to the bottom of the cup and placed it on the sauce all the while making sure my holes were aligned. When the glue hardened over night, I then placed a lock washer on the threaded end and carefully placed the rod into the holes, and placed another lock washer on the protruding rod and carefully tightened the nut. When you do this remember you are working inside your cup and that is a small area so I suggest you use a long nose pliers to do this work.
Now it is done and I can place them in strategic places throughout my garden. I also discovered that these make great birthday and Christmas gifts for fellow gardeners.
