Blueberry Seeds

   (Read 500+ times)
By Patricia Wainwright

Blueberry is a bush plant known to produce delicious and tasty fruits which can be eaten raw or made into other products. The berries are also rich in antioxidants and vitamins such as A, C, and E. Inside the fruits you find blueberry seeds. You can use these seeds to grow your own blueberry bush. You can buy blueberry seeds from gardening supply stores, online shops and nurseries. You can also ask around in your area on where to buy blueberry seeds that are of good quality. Gardening magazines on the other hand are also known to run blueberry seeds for sale ads, so you might want to check out these publications too for leads. Some groups sell organic blueberry seeds, which they claim to be comparatively hardier than inorganic varieties.

If you want to use seeds from berries, you should know how to extract them properly. The first step to doing this is to put a mixture of blueberries and water into a blender. Place the lid tightly and blend the mixture on low for about 15 seconds. Let the mixture rest for 5 minutes then pour out some of the pulp from the blender. Ideally the blueberry seeds would be at the bottom of the mixture while the pulp would rise to the surface. Next, put about a cup of water into the mixture then let it sit for about 5 minutes. Afterwards pour out some of the pulp then add about ½ cup of water into the blender. Let it sit for 5 minutes. Continue this process until only the seeds and water are left. Afterwards, drain off the water in the blender and take out the seeds. Finally, place the blueberry seeds on a paper towel to dry.

Before you plant the seeds you need to first germinate them. This is ideally done in January or February. The first thing that you would need to do when germinating blueberry seeds is to place a layer of sphagnum moss in a flat bottomed box. Next place blueberry seeds on the box then cover it again with another layer of the sphagnum moss. Put water on the seeds to keep it moist then cover the box with newspaper. After a month of storage (preferably in a warm place) you would see the blueberry seeds starting to germinate and ready for planting.

Blueberry is a very adaptable bush plant that can be grown in different types of soils, as long as it receives adequate sunlight and water. However, avoid planting blueberry seeds in waterlogged soil as this is not advisable.
