This is the third in a series of articles that discuss trellises. This article serves more as a guide when building a trellis. Therefore, you will not find detailed information here on how to build a trellis. However, this article will provide good tips and considerations before you begin.
A trellis is a wonderful structure that you can use to grow plants that produce climbing vines. It maximizes space and is ideal if you have a small plot or live in areas where there are no provisions for gardening such as apartments. When building a trellis there are several variables that you need to consider. First off would be the core materials that you would be using. You can choose to use hard woods such as cedar or pressure treated lumber. When choosing the latter, make sure that it doesn’t contain chemicals that are harmful to plants. Also, wood needs to be treated every so often to protect them from damage brought about by weather. You can also choose to use vinyl, which is practically maintenance free but does not hold up well against the effects of prolonged direct sun exposure. Metal is another material that you can use when building a trellis, although this is not recommended if this is the first time you are going to construct one.
When you are building a trellis, style is another factor that you need to take into consideration. It is helpful to create a design that would match the appearance of your garden. For example, if your yard has a simple look, it is recommended that you build a trellis with a straightforward design. On the other hand there is also a saying that beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. It’s perfectly okay to be as creative as you want when it comes to designing your trellis as long as you are happy with the results.
What you also need to include in your plans for building a trellis is the type of plants that you intend grow in it. For small plants, it is recommended that the spacing in the trellis be narrow. On the other hand, it is advisable that you build a trellis that has a sturdy structure if you are going to grow plants that produce strong and heavy vines.
Finally before you go ahead building a trellis, it is helpful to put your ideas first in paper, taking into consideration height, spacing, and location, among others.
