Catnip Seeds For The Happiest Cat In The World

   (Read 500+ times)
By Patricia Wainwright

It is only later on in life I realized that Catnip is an herb. I had always thought of Catnip as the opponent of Herman the mouse in the cartoon character-filled years of my childhood. It was a pleasant surprise to learn, though, that Catnip the herb is a favorite of cats and that it can be grown from cuttings or from Catnip seeds.

How Do You Grow Catnip

Catnip or Catmint, as it is also called, is a perennial herb of the mint family which can be used as an herbal tea; and more famously as a safe, non-addictive, and healthy food for cats that makes them reasonably energetic and happy. There are even dried Catnip leaves sold in pet stores. It is believed, however, that freshly dried Catnip is preferred by cats and is more potent. The Catnip also has medicinal values. Here's how to grow the plant from Catnip seeds.

First of all, place the organic Catnip seeds in sealed plastic bags and put these in the freezer for 4 weeks. Thaw the Catnip seeds completely then freeze these for another 4 weeks. Thereafter, soak the seeds overnight in warm water so these can germinate.

Plant the seeds in spring when there is no more frost, in well-drained soil and in full sunlight. Keep the soil always moist since Catnip likes water. Plant the seeds to a depth twice their width and space these 10 to 20 inches apart. Prune and thin the seedlings once they produce their second set of leaves.

The Catnip is ready for harvesting in midsummer and fall. Cut all the stems to about 5 to 8 inches above the ground so the plants do not lose its fragrant oils. Only the leaves should be dried in a well-aired area and away from your cats. Just a tiny whiff of Catnip will get your cat visibly energized and animated. After a couple of weeks, the leaves would crumble and flake - ready for brewing or as a sumptuous dish for the cats.

Catnip Seeds for Sale

Where can you buy Catnip seeds? Unlike other seeds, organic Catnip seeds are easy to find. Where to buy Catnip seeds will be the nearest and most convenient place for you and. Even Amazon carries the seeds. These can be bought from home and garden centers, nurseries, and such stores as Wal-Mart and Target. Interestingly, there are farms that specialize in Catnip called Catnip Farm and CityCats. The Catnip seeds usually come in 500 mg. packets.

Lavish your cat with affection and nutrients - keep him smiling always even if he reportedly has nine lives. Buy Catnip seeds now, grow catnip herbs, and see what a world of difference it can make for your cats and for your mid-morning or afternoon tea.
