Cedar Planter Boxes

   (Read 500+ times)
By Patricia Wainwright

Cedar planter boxes are great to use with large trees since they make landscaping convenient. Moreover, cedar planter boxes are effective in preventing water runoff and erosion. Cedar planter boxes used in large trees make for a nice landscape feature. In addition, a flower bed can be placed inside the boxes for variety and to improve aesthetics. A soft wood, cedar gives off a special scent that repels insects and pests.

Building cedar planter boxes is relatively easy and can help you save money. The materials that you will need for this type of a project are a hammer, 16 pieces of 2 foot long steel re-bars, a maul, 6 to 8 inches long nails, and eight 4X4 cedar posts.

The first process in making cedar boxes is framing. Using eight 4X4 posts, frame the perimeter of the tree. The posts needs to be long enough to frame the root system of the tree and should be of equal length. Typically, eight to 10 foot long posts are ideal for framing most large trees, however you can elect to use shorter or longer posts if you so desire.

The next step in making cedar planter boxes is to dig a square pattern trench that is 2 inches deep and 4 inches wide around the tree. This trench will serve as the holding area for the posts. Next arrange the posts in a square pattern around the tree and lay them into the trench. Make sure that the posts’ ends are flushed securely with one another. Next, nail the ends together.

Afterwards, using a half inch spade bit drill four holes in each of the posts. The holes on each post should be evenly placed. Next, using a pencil mark the drill holes on the side of each post.

Next place on top of the square frame the four remaining posts. Make sure that the ends are securely flushed with one another. Next, nail the ends of the posts together.

Afterwards, drill through the top posts, making sure that they are evenly lined with the holes that you have drilled on the bottom posts.

Next, insert the steel re-bar into each of the holes and then hammer each with a maul. This will ensure that the posts would not fall over or shift overtime.

The second to the last step in making cedar planter boxes is to fill with mulch, topsoil, compost or soil amendments the interior of the planter box. Finally, water the mixture thoroughly.
