Choosing A Wrought Iron Gazebo

   (Read 500+ times)
By Patricia Wainwright

Why have wrought iron gazebos in your garden?

Say the word gazebo and different people will have different images pop into their heads. The bride to be will think of the photo opportunity of a bridal picture under a gazebo. The gardener will think of climbing plants and the possibilities of growing them up a gazebo, and your average person will think of some kind of garden awning under which you can find shelter from the shade. Say the words, wrought iron gazebo and different images will appear, along with a wistful wish that their garden contained a wrought iron gazebo. The properties of wrought iron make it an attractive metal to use in garden landscaping, not only for its durability, but for its beauty as it weathers. It can be forged into intricate shapes, unlike some metals, and a gazebo in this metal can be made to be as ornate or as simple as the buyer wants. A gazebo can be a structure for growing plants around and up, or you can choose a wrought iron gazebo arbor, which then becomes a focal point of the garden and a place to sit and admire the landscape.

Types of wrought iron gazebo

Essentially a gazebo has four legs shaped to create a round or square enclosed space, which with the largest gazebos creates enough room to place a bench inside, and you should be able to stand upright inside. The most basic metal gazebos, are simple, double arches, at the start or end of a path, to bring interest to a dull corner of the garden, or simply as a structure to grow your climbing roses up, intertwined with a selection of clematis. A simple gazebo will consist of two arches meeting at a spire or decorative top, with their feet pushed at least 12 inches into the ground. The ultimate in decorative gazebos will have hand scroll work on the legs or at the top, often named after architectural or fashion styles such as Regency or Gothic.

Availability and prices of wrought iron gazebos

You can buy gazebos at garden centers but often you will find more interesting designs from specialist ironworks or forges. A wrought iron gazebo can be painted, so if ordering online you will have the option of a variety of colors, white is popular with hotels holding weddings. The gazebo can be galvanized or un-galvanized, with inside heights ranging from 78 to 90 inches. Some gazebos can be supplied with bolt down legs which will fix the gazebo to a patio or deck. Expect to pay from £250 to £600 plus shipping costs, if buying from UK ironworks. In the USA, you can pay $1,200 for an "antique style" gazebo.
