I certainly agree with a gardener-friend who said that compost is a “gardener’s gold” especially for those who grow plants under harsh soil and physical conditions. Compost enhances the quality of garden soil, resulting in healthier plants, and sometimes more luscious produce. A compost turner facilitates the process of rotating and aerating compost. So, why does compost need to be turned around?
Composting is nature’s way of decomposing and recycling organic materials into a fertile soil called compost. When you make compost, you are giving back nutrients back into the soil – thus maintaining the cycle of life. By turning the materials for composting, you are adding oxygen to it and equitably distributing the nutrients. Compost is an inexpensive and environment-friendly substitute to chemical-based fertilizers and is used extensively for organic farming. Regular turning of the compost results in richer compost at the shortest possible time and removes the unpleasant scent associated with compost that is not turned. A compost turner compresses compost, preventing bacteria from reaching into most of it. A word of caution, however, too much turning of the compost will agitate the composting process and you may not get your desired outcome.
Compost turners are one of the many kinds of composting equipment. The type of compost turner that you will need depends on the volume of compost to be produced and whether these will be used for a farm or your garden. Thus, there are compost turners for commercial farm production and there are compost turners for small-scale or backyard gardening.
The compost turner for backyard gardening comes on a stand and wheels, there is minimal physical exertion when filling it or turning it. Small compost turners can fit on your back porch or even fit inside your house. There are dual-bin compost turners that are ideal for large gardens. When one bin is full and composting has started, the other can be started, ensuring a constant supply of compost.
A compost turner for sale can be found in many garden or horticultural supplies store and even on-line. There are branded ones and there are generic or unbranded ones. There are even used compost turners for sale. Others make their own compost turner.
Apart from the benefits mentioned above, the value of a compost turner can be further appreciated in areas where there are laws or ordinances against composting. In as much as it is closed, none of the latter is being violated with the use of a compost turner.
