The joys of having a deck are endless. It can be a place to relax in, read, rest, cook, eat, and have a good time in with friends and family. However, nothing is more depressing than a deck looking exactly like a deck. Wouldn’t it be just amazing to have a special nook to lose oneself in? Imagine sitting on a chair listening to the sounds of nature then getting up to meander around pocketfuls of greens, reds, and other vibrant colors. It would be simple bliss. Creating a deck garden requires a lot of time and effort but the finished product can be a masterpiece. Deck garden design involves four considerations. Properly addressing these will not only result in a well-designed deck garden but will also relieve the owner of the stress of frequent maintenance problems and procedures.
The first factor is space planning. A deck garden design plan should incorporate the lifestyle and personality of the owner. If entertaining is a norm in the household, a sufficient seating place should be added. To make it more relaxing, the colors and patterns used should unify the whole look of the deck and make it a chic outdoor space. During space planning, other factors such as shading, sunlight, drainage, and topography which are necessary for vegetation are also considered.
The second factor in deck garden design is water supply. Providing enough water for plants that are mostly in large containers can be hard especially during the summer. What some owners do is make sure that each plant container is checked for water needs as frequently as possible. It is also important to ensure that all plants in one container have the same moisture requirements so that maintenance need not be different for every plant.
The third factor is the sun and shade pattern. In deck garden design, the location of plants should be based on the amount and length of exposure they need to both sun and shade. There are four known climate categories that plants usually fall into: deep shade, shade, partial shade, and full sun. When buying plants, consulting the nursery owner or local plant supplier will give one an idea of the type of sun/shade category a plant falls into.
Both the second and third factors are important in the proper choice of plants. A deck garden design will only work when the right type of plants are chosen and positioned in a location that provides the needed amount of sun, shade, moisture, and water supply.
A deck garden promises the delights of R & R without having to pay hundreds of dollars for it. The best deck garden design should incorporate the wants and needs of the household to make it truly pleasing and functional.
