Deck Lighting

   (Read 500+ times)
By Patricia Wainwright

Deck lighting provides subtle and elegant illumination to decks at night. It provides a romantic backdrop for gatherings, sit down meals, and similar occasions. Placed at the steps leading to a deck, it not only provides soft yet beautiful lighting, but it also lights up the way for people to prevent accidents from happening. Deck lighting can also aid in brightening and highlighting certain areas in a decorative garden.

Most deck lighting systems are relatively inexpensive and easy to install. Apart from steps and decks, one can also install deck lights on decking rails or surrounding perimeters. Spotlights can also be added to enhance the effect and appearance of lights.
Twelve volt systems are ideal for self-installation. These low voltage deck lighting systems aside from being safe and quick to install, also don’t require special permits for installation.

There are various deck lighting ideas that homeowners can choose from. One attractive and low cost option for homeowners is solar deck lighting. This type of deck lighting can be installed easily, since it doesn’t use a lot of wiring, if any at all. Power is collected during the day from a photocell, which is then discharged to bulbs at night. It costs virtually nothing to operate these solar lighting systems.

Another interesting deck lighting option is recessed deck lighting. Lights are installed and sit flat on a surface, giving decks an elegant and neat finish. They are unobtrusive and best placed in patio floors or steps to help people see where they’re walking. Recessed deck lighting can be also used for overhead lighting, for cooking or entertaining purposes.

Many builders recommend using a combination of low power and solar deck lighting. For occasions when photocells in solar deck lights are not able to collect sufficient power, a homeowner can always turn to low voltage deck lighting.

When plotting a deck lighting plan, it is always helpful to do some research. Identify areas where deck lights would create the best and most dramatic effect in a deck or area. Studying different deck lighting systems, from low power voltage, solar power lights to accents can also significantly aid homeowners in making the right buying decisions. A homeowner can also consult a lighting professional or experienced builder for valuable advice and tips.

Installed in the right places, deck lighting can transform an otherwise ordinary deck into a beautiful and elegant area at night, perfect for entertaining guests and family.
