A deck in the garden is a great place to sit and chat with friends enjoying the outdoors in comfort. Most decks are wooden, and wood has its own beauty, but decks can look a bit bare; so treat your deck as an extra room and decorate it with deck planters. Consider the deck from every angle, where you position chairs and tables, leaving space to cross the deck to the garden, and then look at the areas you want to add interest to; this is where you can put your planters. Do not forget the wall behind you, and if you have a deck with an arbor structure, think of these as extra decorating space, and use hanging deck planters to add color and appeal.
Types of deck planters
There are various planters you can use to enhance the look of your deck; some have a dual purpose such as deck planters and benches, where you gain extra seating, in a choice of shapes and designs. You can choose from zinc galvanized steel, terracotta or wooden deck planters to compliment your deck; planters are available in different shapes and sizes. Look at your deck as an extra room, add shape and height to the corners and edges, where nobody sits, and plant with scented plants to increase the pleasure of this outside space. Devise a color scheme for your deck, using the deck planters in complimentary shades, and selecting flowers and colored leaf plants to add accent. If your deck has a railing round it, there are deck planters for railing attachment, which either fit over the railing or hang from it.
Maintaining your deck planters
It is important to remember that plants in any kind of container need a different care regime to those growing in flower beds. These plants will need watering more often, and you will need to add plant nutrients. One of the simplest way to give your plants nutrients is with slow release plant pellets, which contain all the nutrients your plants need, released over a period of time, so you do not need to top up too often. Regular dead heading of flowers will prolong their life, and plant bulbs in your deck planters, so that even in winter you have flowers close to the house you can enjoy. Your deck is your garden living space, and well decorated it will increase your enjoyment.
