Desert Landscaping Ideas

   (Read 500+ times)
By Patricia Wainwright

Probably the most limiting variable for people creating desert landscaping ideas is water. Many people would be too cautious and conservative when landscaping arid areas for fear that there won’t be enough water to irrigate plants and foliage. In truth there is a way to managing this resource and still get a beautiful and even lush desert garden.

The first thing that you would want to consider when landscaping desert areas is plant type. Choose plants that are native to the area since these would normally have good adaptive capabilities respective to their habitat. You would also find that they would not require that much irrigation since they have evolved to thrive in places where water supply is scarce. In addition, maintaining them would also not be a problem since they would not demand frequent fertilization. It is also advisable that you place the low plants in front and the tall ones at the back of your desert garden to ensure that every plant gets adequate sunlight.

To optimize water use, group trees or plants according to their irrigation requirement. Good landscaping ideas would typically make use of sloping techniques that would maximize water distribution. Ponds or pools are good items that you can incorporate in your desert garden design. These structures can provide relief from the scorching heat to you and your garden as well as serve as a water source.

In reality the hardest part in desert landscaping is designing. For this matter, it would be helpful on your part to consult experienced professionals on good landscaping ideas. Magazines and gardening publications are also excellent sources for desert landscaping ideas. Be mindful of your budget and space constraints. Time is also another variable that you would want to consider.

One thing that would help you when you are designing your desert garden is to incorporate rocks and stones. It is okay to be creative. Do not limit yourself to plain looking boulders and rocks. Use coloured stones to add variety in your garden. Strategically placed rocks can also reflect light (which is especially useful at night) making your garden more appealing.

Ideally, the landscaped area in your garden should be in a spot where it can be seen from the inside of your home. A beautifully landscaped desert garden can add value to your house. So put your desert landscaping ideas to use and create a good and soothing place to relax, contemplate, reflect, and unwind after a busy day.
