Drip Sprinkler Irrigation

   (Read 500+ times)
By Patricia Wainwright

With the hot weather bearing down upon us right now, you are maybe wishing you didn't have to spend so much time watering your garden. Well, the good news is that you really can get away from having to spend hours every week watering your plants. What you should do is install a drip sprinkler irrigation system, which will take care of all the work for you. You'll just have to sit back, relax, and enjoy a well-watered, thriving summer garden!

How do drip sprinkler irrigation systems work?

There are a variety of drip sprinkler irrigation systems out there, but they all work in the same way. A perforated hose is buried right under the surface of the soil, whether in flower beds or under the lawn. This hose is then attached to the water source. Sometimes, when the pressure available is not enough, there is the need to buy a pump in order to guarantee that the drip system will function to perfection. The water travels from one end of the hose to the end, and drips out of the holes in the hose, watering your plants from the root down.

A drip sprinkle irrigation system also consists of sprinklers connected to the same hose, which are raised and come out of the ground, spraying your plants and giving them the humidity they need.

What are the advantages of installing a drip sprinkler irrigation system?

Well, for one thing, you need not spend hours and hours watering your plants every summer. Apart from this, drip sprinkler irrigation systems can be attached to a sensor that starts irrigation only when the soil reaches a certain degree of dryness, which allows you to forget about watering. Furthermore, drip irrigation systems (without the sprinklers) are perfect for flower beds, since they do not erode the soil. When you water with a hose, the water drops that fall directly to the soil have an eroding effect, which causes a degradation in the quality of your soil. This does not happen in your lawn, so a good idea would be to use drip irrigation for beds and borders and sprinkle irrigation for the lawn.

What are the disadvantages of installing a drip sprinkler irrigation system?

On the one hand, installing a drip sprinkler irrigation professionally can be expensive. If you do not have the means to do it, you can try doing it yourself. However, a professional service will assure you that no pipes (electricity, gas, water) are damaged during installation. This brings us to the next disadvantage: in order to bury the hose, some parts of your garden will have to be disturbed. A professional service will also guarantee that said disturbance is kept to a minimum.

Many people find that drip sprinkler irrigation systems are not so expensive, if you consider what they can do for you. If you are tired of watering (or forgetting to do so!) a drip sprinkler irrigation system might just be the solution you are looking for! Try to look for a system that will adjust to your budget, and give it a try!
