The dwarf Kaffir lime tree is an excellent option for those who would like to have their own tree but have neither the space nor the type of climate required for its adequate growth. Dwarf trees can be planted in containers and kept either indoors or outdoors, and bear fruit of the same quality as regular Kaffir lime trees.
The dwarf Kaffir lime tree, Citrus Aurantifolia, is a tree that originated in Asia. This is the reason why it thrives in warm tropical or subtropical regions. It is a perennial plant, which has lush, dark-green leaves throughout the year. In spring, it offers small, white, very fragrant flowers. The limes are produced afterwards, all throughout the summer and fall. Limes are smallish green fruits appreciated for their intense and superior flavor, and can be divided into acid or sweet according to their taste. The Kaffir lime, in particular, is quite large, and belongs to the acid variety. It is used in a great deal of Asian recipes.
The dwarf Kaffir Lime tree needs certain conditions as regards climate, soil and watering. It does best in hot climates where there is little risk of frost, but this should not deter you, for you now have the option of growing a dwarf Kaffir lime tree in your own patio or kitchen. If this is the case, there is always the possibility of taking it outside in the warmer summer months. The dwarf Kaffir lime tree also needs high humidity and plenty of water. Even more so if kept in containers, where water evaporates more quickly. Be sure to spray it with water every now and then if the air is too dry, and water it every time the soil is dry. The soil should not be rich in nutrients, and it should drain well, whether it is planted outside or inside. If you decide to plant it outside, make sure it is in the full sun, but sheltered from strong winds, which could break its branches easily.
If you plant your dwarf Kaffir lime tree in a container, make sure that the soil is not too rich in organic material, since dwarf Kaffir lime trees prefer poorer soils. Add a slow-release fertilizer every year, around spring, to ensure fruit of good quality, but that should be all. It is not necessary to prune dwarf Kaffir lime trees, at least the first few years and especially if they are planted in containers.
The dwarf Kaffir lime tree is quite hardy as regards pests, but can be attacked by white flies, especially if it is in a dry location. If this happens, look for a pesticide that can control the problem, or you can turn to organic pest-control options so as to be able to enjoy the fruit without any problems.
As you can see, there is no reason why you shouldn’t be able to enjoy home-grown Kaffir limes, since the dwarf Kaffir lime tree is ideal for growing indoors or outdoors, in containers or directly in the soil as long as its requirements are met.
