Many gardeners would find the use of dwarf shrubs for landscaping to be cost advantageous. Because of their small size, they don’t need that much care and attention. For effective windbreak ramps, plant dwarf flowering shrubs near the foundation of your home or a few meters away from this section of your house. You can also plant dwarf shrub varieties such as dwarf boxwood shrubs in the northwest portion of tall trees and shrubs in your garden to direct cold wind upward and away from your home.
The foundation sill plate in your house is where most air leakages are known to occur. Planting dwarf shrubs and bushes around this area can effectively block cold winds from entering your house and thus reduce leakages. You would also be able to save on utility bills in the long run by practicing this landscaping technique. In addition, using dwarf shrubs for landscaping can also spruce up your garden. Some varieties of this shrub are known to produce tiny flowers which are pleasant to look at while others have barks that many people find appealing, especially during winter. Dwarf shrubs can also cool the air near your home in the summer. Branches and leaves can block the harsh rays of the sun, while transpiration (moisture produced by plants) that occurs in the shrubs can lower air temperature. The air temperature in and near dwarf shrubs are known to be lower by 10 degrees compared to its surrounding area. When using dwarf shrubs for landscaping, consider positioning some near the south and west sides of your home to help reduce heat during summer. This dwarf shrub belt can block and redirect the heat that would come from your patio, driveways and sideways. Some critics argue that using dwarf shrubs for landscaping can be quite expensive compared to using common fast-growing commercial shrubs. There is some truth to this claim since this type of shrub is known to cost more than its larger cousins. However in the long term you would be able to realize cost savings with dwarf shrubs since they are able to maintain their miniature size throughout their life, making re-landscaping unnecessary. The same cannot be said of fast growing shrubs which require frequent replacement and/or trimming since they are known to quickly outgrow the plots where they were planted.
When choosing dwarf shrubs for landscaping, look for hardy varieties that are known to withstand extreme weather conditions.
