Edging Bricks Can Define Areas In Your Garden

   (Read 500+ times)
By Patricia Wainwright

What are edging bricks used for?

Most gardens are a combination of lawn, flower beds and sometimes a vegetable plot. Each area needs maintenance and a garden design is as much about practicalities as aesthetics. Lawns need to be cut, and it is preferable if the flowerbeds do not encroach on the lawn. For ease of cutting and clear definition, lawn edging bricks can be used; these will prevent plants from growing into the lawn and vice versa, and it makes it easier to cut the lawn right up to the edge. Many artists use a thicker pencil to outline parts of their pictures, in the same way; a gardener can use garden edging bricks for each part of their garden, clearly defining each area. This adds demarcation lines to separate areas, but with clever choice of color and type, edging bricks can also add beauty and style.

Types of edging bricks used

Lawn edging is popular with many gardeners as cutting the lawn and trimming round the edges is time consuming, and lawn edging makes it easier. There is plastic lawn edging available, but many a mower has chewed that up and spat it all over the lawn! Decorative wrought iron edging adds a stylish touch but can be very expensive as is tile edging. The benefit of using edging bricks as lawn edging is that they are relatively inexpensive and simple to install. If you want to make a focal point of a particular flower bed, or highlight a tree; then edging bricks can be an effective border to make it stand out. Landscaping edging bricks are specifically used in garden design, where two different surfaces meet but should not mix; thus lawn and soil, path and water, gravel and flower bed. They are available in many shades from beige, red to blue, and some are curved to allow the creation of circular and oval designs.

Style and functionality

If the edging bricks are carefully chosen to match the style and color of the house, you can create the effect of garden and house flowing naturally into one another. For example, period bricks can reinforce the house styling, e.g. Victorian bricks edging the lawn of a Victorian-style house. Edging bricks are also eminently practical, allowing water through without soil washing away, they are durable, long lasting, and they weather well, adding a natural but distinctive style to any garden.
