The fig leaf is a recognizable shaped leaf from history books and tales of Adam and Eve. It symbolized modesty, peace and plenty and the fig tree is the first tree mentioned in the bible in Genesis. The top seller in the Pacific Northwest is the Desert king Fig with dark green skin and pink flesh. It crops once a year in August. An alternative to growing a full sized tree in the garden is to grow smaller versions in a pot. The Petite Negri Fig is one of the most popular varieties of dwarf fig trees for sale because it crops twice a year and produces an abundance of sweet black fruit with red flesh. The fig tree that grows best in hot, desert-like conditions is the Texas Blue Giant Fig; it has to be grown indoors in Northern regions.
Expect to pay around $22 for a bare rooted 1-2 foot high fig tree from an online nursery. The common Brown Turkey fig can be found for around $25 and is easily available. You can also find bonsai or houseplant fig trees for sale such as the Sacred Fig Tree which is of great significance for Buddhists as it is the tree under which Buddha became enlightened. The Black Jack is a semi dwarf fig tree which can be kept to between six and eight feet tall with pruning; it also is a prolific producer of sweet and juicy fruit from June to September.
