Flowers are Many Splendid Things

   (Read 50+ times)
By Arlene Wright Correll

When one thinks about beginning a flower garden most times one just grabs any kind of flower packet without thinking. I know, I’ve been there, done that!

For those of you who are first time gardeners lets consider some of the following.

There are many different types of flowers and the beauty of the flowers lies in their softness, their pleasant fragrance and their different colors. Many flowers come in different colors , some of which are found commonly but some colors are rare and this rarity add a which adds their beauty and makes them even more exotic.

There are many different types of flowers for all occasions and there are many flowers which have become so much a part of life by being used for so many occasions that it is difficult to remember the specific emotion they represent. But still even the colors of flowers and the different ways of presenting a bouquet can mean different messages.

There are different uses of different types of flowers
Beginning with some of the interesting facts about flowers, where does the fragrance of flowers come from?

Fragrance in flowers is nature’s way of encouraging pollination. Just as fragrance draw people to take a deeper breath it lures insects to blossoms hidden by leaves and other plants. Some flowers are fragrant only at night times and attract only night flying pollinators while others are more fragrant during the day times. The fragrance comes from essential oils called attars that vaporize easily and infuse the air with their scents. They are present in different combinations in different in different flowers.

Apart from conveying messages, giving out fragrance, flowers are of high medicinal value and are used in different medicines.

The Japanese people have great respect towards flowers because they form a part of their art. Inside their homes many Japanese have an alcove or special place that is decorated with flowers and plants to show the changing of the seasons. Japanese people often make field trips (like "pilgrimages") to see the flowers and trees in different seasons.

There are different colors of different types of flowers and the different colors should be seriously considered. If you want a “woozy” type of garden, then mix them all up all over the place and to make life easier make sure they are perennials so they reseed themselves. As an artist, the colors are important to me and I treat them like colors on my palette. Thinking along those lines, one could color co-ordinate one’s garden. Making a design on paper and coloring in your pieces of your design will give you a good idea on how to lay out your garden spot and what kind of flower seeds or plants to buy.

There are different types of flowers that require different types of care and that is the next thing a beginning gardener should seriously consider. How much time do you have to give to your new garden? How much work do you want to do each day in your new garden? How much water will it need? How much water do you have? Will Global Warming bring unprecedented droughts to your area? Should you consider installing a sprinkler or drip system? Will your soil be the right kind for the seeds or plants you choose or will you need to amend it? Will you have the budget to do all these things?

These are just a few of the things that need to be considered when you begin a flower garden…. But when you do start one you will discover that Flowers are indeed many splendid things.
