If you are thinking of planting a few fruit trees in your garden, it is very possible that you will be wondering what you will need in order to keep them healthy and to maximize yield. The next few paragraphs will give you a clear picture of what is needed.
Fruit Tree Supplies – The Tree
The first thing, of course, is the actual tree. Although it is in theory possible to propagate trees using their seeds, the quality of the new trees can be quite different to the one found in the parent tree. Besides, it takes many years for fruit trees obtained from seed to produce fruit. The best method for obtaining fruit trees is grafting. By grafting, you take a sapling and graft it into an older tree. This makes the waiting period shorter, and quality is assured. Of course, the third option is to buy already-grafted trees and plant them directly. This will generally yield a small crop within two years, and the crop will be larger after that.
Fruit Tree Supplies – Irrigation
The next thing you need to think about is irrigation. Fruit trees require lots of water, especially when they are forming the fruit. If you live in an area where it rains quite often, watering does not pose any problems. If you don’t, then you will have to think of how you are going to get the vital element to your fruit trees. For the general purpose of watering a few fruit trees, a garden hose will do. If you plan on planting many trees, you can consider an irrigation system comprised of drip tubes or lines, which makes the job easier.
Fruit Tree Supplies – Fertilizer
Another important fruit tree supply is fertilizer. Fruit trees deplete the soil of minerals extremely quickly, so you need to make sure you feed your trees the nutrients they need to produce quality fruit. Fertilizers can be organic (natural) compounds especially designed for fruit trees. If you decide on organic fertilizers, you will need things like manure, peat moss or leaf mold. However, it is also possible to buy ready-made organic fertilizer. Non-organic fertilizers tend to act more quickly, but there is always the risk of over-using them and possibly ruining your trees.
Other fruit tree supplies you might need are trellises, or other supportive structures, in case some of the trees need support, and tarps or other similar material to cover the trees in case of hail, which could ruin all the fruit in the trees. Another problem you may encounter are pests, which you will need to eradicate by making use of organic pest control, or resorting to other methods if your problem is that birds eat the fruit.
As you can see, there are many supplies you will need if you decide to plant your very own fruit trees. However, the thrill at finding the new fruit on the tree and the pleasure you are sure to experience when you finally harvest your own fruit will be enough to make up for all the trouble you might have gone to. It is certainly worth it!
