Garden Bricks To Enhance Your Garden

   (Read 500+ times)
By Patricia Wainwright

A garden is not just grass and flower beds. It may contain a vegetable plot, a play area, an eating area with barbecue and a range of outdoor buildings; from the humble shed to the spectacular pool house. Good garden design defines different areas of a garden which includes easy access around each part of the garden. The use of bricks in a garden can be both practical and aesthetic. You may have built brick walls at the front of your house for privacy, but you can use garden bricks at the rear of your house for a variety of purposes. Building a brick barbecue can be a satisfying experience and less expensive than a shop made one. Bricks are an environmentally friendly choice in the garden; they do not rot and they are made from nontoxic, natural materials.

Types of garden bricks

You can use garden bricks in different parts of the garden. If you want to lay a large patio or garden floor, then brick pavers are your best choice, in stone such as sandstone or limestone. Smaller patios or areas between flowerbeds can look very attractive when made from bricks laid in patterns such as herringbone or a simple basket weave design. Garden bricks for this purpose can be basic red bricks, or you can invest in other designs, such as hand-finished shaped bricks and colors such as golden bricks, for sale in a range of buff to yellow shades. Using bricks for garden edging can serve a number of purposes; they are practical because they keep beds separate, aid drainage, increase water retention and suppress weeds; they can and should be pleasant to look at, adding design elements to your garden. Factors to consider when choosing your garden bricks are their level of porosity, how much water they absorb, and the cost of the material they are constructed from, this will help you choose between types of brick.

Garden bricks as a design feature

Garden bricks can be found in landscape garden centers, but you may need to go to a specialist if you are after more unusual colors and designs. Your standard red brick is available from builder’s merchants, but if you want to find garden bricks for sale, or decorative garden bricks in a myriad of designs, you will need to contact a brick manufacturer directly, or look online for a hand-made brick specialist. A favorite material for decorative bricks is terracotta. Another option is glazed clay bricks; round, hexagonal or etched with patterns. Use these garden bricks to highlight an area of the garden, as a focal point, to add interest, especially in the winter when there may be few blooms. Garden bricks should be on your landscaping shopping list; they are versatile, practical, eco-friendly and sometimes just downright beautiful!
