This is the fifth article in a series that talks about trellises.
A garden metal trellis is a good structure to grow plants in your yard. It is also a great space saver, allowing you to grow a good number of crops in an otherwise small lot. A garden metal trellis is also very sturdy and durable and if properly maintained, can last for a very long time. It is impregnable to pests and marauding rodents. It also has a classic and timeless feel to it, so it can match an array of garden landscape designs.
When choosing to buy one, you can go over catalogues to see the latest or popular trellis metal or garden trellis metal designs. You can get one ready-made or have one fabricated. There are many strong materials that are used in the manufacture of such trellis type like cast iron, copper piping, and wrought iron.
There are however several limitations to the use of a metal trellis or metal trellises. A garden metal trellis conducts and absorbs heat very well. This can be a problem to plants as it can damage their leaves and fruits. And so when you are looking for a place to put your garden metal trellis, make sure that it does not get full and direct exposure to the sun during the hottest parts of the day. A garden metal trellis also does not hold up very well to cold. When temperatures are freezing, the trellis will absorb the cold which would have a direct impact on the plants that are clinging onto it. If possible, bring your metal trellis indoors during extremely cold winters.
Another issue with a garden metal trellis is rust. If constantly exposed to water, it can easily corrode and its structure may weaken as a result. In this aspect, make sure to apply anticorrosive products to your metal trellis for protection. Also place your metal trellis in an area where it will not be in constant contact with water.
It is not recommended that you place your trellis in a windy area. One is that this will prevent pollination which is essential to the propagation of plants. Another reason is that strong winds may knock down your trellis which can result to injuries or accidents. On the other hand, you would also not want your garden metal trellis placed against a tall structure or building. This is because it may not get sufficient sun exposure which can be detrimental to the health of your plants.
