Garden Paving Slabs - Building A Patio Or Walkway In Your Garden

   (Read 500+ times)
By Patricia Wainwright

The hard detail in a garden is as important as the plants and lawn. Without some consideration of layout and landscaping, you may find parts of your garden unreachable, or hard to appreciate. If you are trying to create structure and design to your garden, consider using garden paving slabs for patios or pathways, adding places to stop and admire the beauty of the garden.

What can you do with garden paving slabs?

A patio in your garden increases the gardens usability; creating a social space for putting chairs and tables for meals and providing a place to sit and admire the view. Traditionally the patio comes off the back of the house, maybe with French doors leading onto it. This may be a missed opportunity for maximizing the use of your garden. As the sun moves across the sky, different parts of the garden become shaded, as others move into the light. If you use garden paving slabs nearer the middle or bottom of your garden, as well as by the house; you can create a second sunny spot to sit in at another time of the day. You can even make this position secluded by carefully placed shrubs, and create an alternative view of the garden. Linking your two patios can be a pathway of garden paving slabs that take the user on a journey around the garden, past statues and water features until arriving at the second hidden patio. If you have a vegetable garden or allotment, garden paving slabs make good separators for the beds. They allow you to access your plants from both sides, and you can avoid walking on the soil.

Types of garden paving slabs

Most garden paving slabs are made from stone, although there are some synthetic ones made of weather resistant polypropylene. The beauty of natural stone is that each slab is slightly different from the next, so your patio will be unique. You can choose from sandstone or limestone in natural stone ranges and polished stone for a different more glossy finish. Good garden paving slab companies will offer patio packs, giving you cost savings, and they will also create design ideas for you to follow. Garden paving slabs can be fashioned into shapes; this will add curves and interest to your pathways and patios. They can be smaller and made into circles for a central focal point and nowadays the craftsmanship is such that you can create a modern urban look as well as a cottage garden rustic effect. Choosing natural materials for your garden paving slabs will add warmth and charm to your garden. They have a long-lasting quality and a finish that gets better with age.
