Garden Trellis Netting

   (Read 500+ times)
By Patricia Wainwright

This is the second in a series of articles about trellis, the first of which was about vegetable trellis.

Garden trellis netting is a structure you can use to maximize space when growing plants. This garden support structure is versatile, strong, durable yet lightweight. It can easily be folded and stored when not in use. You can place it at the side of your house, patio or fence, so you can make good use of available space in your home. Some people install it standing up supported only by poles and wires, while some make an A-frame using two nettings. There are a lot of inner city gardening projects that use this type of trellis to make good use of limited space. Apart from individuals with small garden lots, this garden trellis netting is also ideal for people living in apartments who would typically not have a garden incorporated into their unit.

Garden trellis netting is perfect for climbing plants which if left on their own, can encroach on other plants and deprive them of nutrients. Plants are kept off the ground which keeps them protected from pests and moisture. Crops also receive sufficient sunlight and air which is beneficial to their growing and health. Tomato is a particular plant that would grow well in garden trellis netting. The vines of the tomato can wrap around the trellis, saving you valuable space. It is also strong enough to hold the fruits of this plant. However it is also recommended that you place clips in the netting to add support to the fruits. Harvesting tomatoes is also very easy when this type of trellis is used as you can pick the fruits from large openings (usually 7 inches) on the netting.

Plastic trellis netting will not damage young plants since it does not absorb heat like other trellises. On the other hand, nylon trellis netting is strong enough to support climbing plants and vines yet light enough to be installed by a single person. One typical garden trellis netting design is lattice, which is made up of a series of wood or plastic strings interwoven together to form a grid. Some people would even grow flowering plants such as roses in some areas of the netting for added visual effect. Another common garden trellis netting type is the ground design, which is made up of wood slates arranged to form a cradle like structure. This trellis is ideal for growing certain climbing plants such as green beans and tomatoes.
