Garden Window

   (Read 500+ times)
By Patricia Wainwright

A garden window is a specialized window that has four panels and usually installed in kitchens. They also jut out or protrude out of a wall. To be categorized as a garden window, it needs to have four glass sides except for the bottom. Some garden windows are also equipped with shelves.

Because of their design, garden windows also serve as greenhouses, letting extra light in to promote the growth of plants and herbs that are raised indoors. Garden window plants can benefit from the light that garden windows trap. Because of this ideal environment, small herbs and plants can be grown all year round. Although arguably one can grow plants in any window, a garden window has more space and is thus more suited for the task. Garden window boxes are generally wide and spacious and can accommodate a number of pots.

Another draw for garden windows is that they improve the visual appeal of a particular spot in a house. The interplay of light and glass makes for an interesting and appealing sight.

Garden windows are readily available in home improvement stores and one can choose from a variety of designs and styles. The more common frames are made of vinyl and aluminum. The former is highly recommended because of its better thermal performance and ability to withstand condensation.

Garden window prices depend on brand, materials used and quality of finish. In general, they are not cheap and so it is recommended that one thoroughly study the available options when buying. To be safe, choose garden window brands that are known for their high standards and quality. Check out credible Internet sites or ask knowledgeable people about good manufacturers.

When installing garden windows, one has the option of installing them or getting a professional to do it. Most manufacturers offer installation for an additional fee which can be time saving and is ideal for busy people. If you have experience installing windows then it is okay for you to do the installation yourself, but if you are rather inexperienced or don’t have any experience at all, you would be better off getting a trained professional to do it.

Special care is needed when maintaining garden windows. Most manufacturers do not recommend the use of harsh chemicals or abrasive materials when cleaning the glass panels as they might easily get damaged. A simple soapy water mixture is all that is needed for this job. With proper care and maintenance, a garden window can last for a long time.
