Gazebos and Canopies

   (Read 500+ times)
By Patricia Wainwright

Gazebos and canopies are two garden structures that provide shade from the sun and protection against the elements. They are sometimes used interchangeably but it should be noted that there are a number of differences between the two. Between outdoor gazebos and canopies the latter is less permanent.

Garden canopies are basically made of collapsible poles and a roofing fabric. Most models are highly portable and can easily be assembled and dismantled. They can be used for different purposes and are not only restricted for backyard use. Between gazebos and canopies, the latter offers more versatility. You can easily replace the roofing fabric in most models to match your surroundings. Being lightweight is both an advantage and a disadvantage for garden canopies. Since they are not heavy, they can be transported easily. On the downside, they can also be easily damaged by high winds or violent weather. For this matter, you would need to place supporting structures on the poles of a garden canopy if you are going to put it in an area that experiences difficult weather conditions.

Gazebos on the other hand offer more permanence. They are generally fixed structures and can be made from different materials such as wood and vinyl. Gazebos can be used as focal points in a garden or yard. Also many designs have seats or benches incorporated in them. You can typically enter and exit one from different directions. Since they are sturdier than canopies they can provide you better protection against the harsh sun and the elements. They also come in a variety of designs. There are simple ones with straightforward designs and there are ones that have an elaborate appearance. You can choose from oval, rectangular, and hexagonal gazebos among others. You can decorate the insides of your gazebo if you wish. For instance you can put flower pots around it or install a lighting system for illumination at night. You can also put some cushioning on seats for comfort.

You can wrap a gazebo with netting to prevent insects and bugs from entering. They are also great structures to hold informal meetings, intimate gatherings and sit down meals. After you are done tending your garden, you can relax in your gazebo and view your work.

Both gazebos and canopies are readily available in home improvement, do-it-yourself, online, and hardware stores. However, it should be noted that gazebos are generally costlier than canopies.
