Good and Bad Companion Herbs

Being an organic gardener, I do not like to use any chemicals on my garden, so in order to keep pests and disease down or to help enhance plant growth, I will use companion plants. Companion plants are plants chosen for intercropping with a given crop because of its ability to enhance or complement the other’s growth.

Below is a list of herbs that helps to enhance plant growth.

Anise is good for Coriander.
Basil is good for peppers and tomatoes.
Borage is good for beans, strawberries, and tomatoes.
Chamomile is good for cucumbers and onions.
Dandelion is good for fruit trees.
Garlic is good for roses.
Larkspur is good for beans and cabbage.
Marigold is good for potatoes, roses and tomatoes.
Oregano and rosemary are good for beans.
Sage is good for cabbage, carrots, strawberries, tomatoes, and marjoram.
Tarragon is good for almost all vegetables.
Thyme is good for eggplant, potatoes, and tomatoes.

Below is a list of some herbs that can be harmful to other plants.

Anise is bad for carrots.
Chives are bad for beans and peas.
Dill is bad for carrots and tomatoes.
Garlic is bad for beans and peas.
Mustard is bad for turnips.
Onion is bad for beans, peas and sage.
Tansy is bad for collard greens.
Wormwood is bad for most vegetables.

Below is a list of herbs that help repel pests.

Ants are repelled by peppermint, spearmint and tansy.
Aphids are repelled by catnip, chives, marigold, garlic, peppermint, nasturtium, and eucalyptus.
Cabbage butterfly is repelled by southernwood.
Carrot fly is repelled by leek, lettuce, onion, rosemary, sage, and wormwood.
Codling moth is repelled by garlic and wormwood.
Corn earworm is repelled by marigold and geranium.
Cucumber beetle is repelled by catnip, marigold, nasturtium, radish, and rue.
Cutworm is repelled by spiny amaranth.
Flea beetle is repelled by catnip, peppermint, rue, tansy, spearmint, and tobacco.
Japanese beetle is repelled by catnip, chives, garlic, and tansy.
Mexican bean beetle is repelled by marigold, rosemary, and savories.
Mole is repelled by castor beans and narcissus.
Rabbits are repelled by garlic, marigolds, and onions.
Slugs and snails are repelled by fennel, garlic, and rosemary.
Spider mites are repelled by coriander.
Squash bugs are repelled by catnip, peppermint, petunia, radish, and tansy.
Tomato hornworms are repelled by dill, borage, and opal basil.
