Grow Lucky Bamboo Plant

   (Read 500+ times)
By Patricia Wainwright

It is quite easy to grow Lucky Bamboo plant. This plant, originally from Africa and called Dracaena Sanderiana, is not difficult to grow, and can be a very interesting and decorative focal point in your living room. Its green ribbon-like leaves, which have a yellowish white stripe in the middle, are very decorative and attractive. This, along with the fact that it is quite easy to maintain, makes lucky bamboo an interesting option for interior decoration.

Lucky bamboo is not really bamboo, but a plant from the species Dracaena. Like all dracaenas, lucky bamboo is a tropical plant, which means that it thrives in a humid, warm environment. It is for this reason that you should spray your lucky bamboo’s leaves with water about twice a week, and ensure it is well-watered. If this is not possible, then you should at least clean the leaves with water every week to ensure it gets humidity through its leaves. If its moisture requirements are not met, its leaves can turn yellow and fall off and you will not be able to grow lucky bamboo plant successfully. Do not water too much. Lucky bamboo does not tolerate wet soil. If you see that its leaves lose their shine, it can be a hint that you are overwatering it.

Apart from humidity, lucky bamboo needs plenty of indirect sunlight. If placed in a spot where it gets the full sun, the tips of its leaves will very likely turn yellow, affecting the look of the plant. On the other hand, not enough light will cause its leaves to turn completely green and lose their white streak down the middle, which will make the plant far less attractive. The ideal place where you can grow lucky bamboo plant is near a window in a well-lit room, or if the weather is mild, you can place it outside, in a porch or patio. If lucky bamboo is surrounded by other plants it is better because the air around them will be more humid and lucky bamboo will benefit from this situation.

Lucky bamboo also needs a well-drained, rich soil, full of organic material. Once it is established, you will need to fertilize every month during the summer season with a liquid fertilizer to ensure success when you grow lucky bamboo plant. Furthermore, lucky bamboo is very easy to propagate. If you notice your plant has got too big, you can cut the top part of the longest stalk, where two side shoots will develop. If you place one of the ends of that stalk in water, you will notice that it forms new roots after a few weeks. When you see the roots, you can plant your new stalk of lucky bamboo and you will have a new plant.

It is quite easy to grow lucky bamboo plant. All you need is a rich soil with good drainage, a well-lit room, adequate watering and periodic fertilizing. All these steps will allow your lucky bamboo plant to thrive and adds a tropical touch to a corner of your living room. Do give it a try!
