   (Read 500+ times)
By Kenny Leichester

Aloe Vera is one of the many succulents that are grown in the garden. This is an ornamental plant. However, because it has thorny foliage and therefore may not look as elegant as you would like it to be. However, there are many good uses of this plant. Before you start growing this succulent in your garden, you need to know more about this plant. First and foremost, you need to know that the aloe vera, being a succulent contains approximately 95 % water and is generally found in warmer places. Therefore, if you feel that this is a shade loving plant, you are completely wrong because this plant needs good amount of sunlight to grow.

There is not much fuss about the soil for aloe vera because it grows in moderately fertile soil. Only thing that you will have to ensure is that the soil has proper drainage. If aloe vera is partly submerged in water, there are chances that the plant may die. When growing aloe vera, you will have to feed it with the necessary nutrients. Generally, good peat compost along with good quality fertilizers can do the trick.

For growing the aloe vera, you will have to select a good place. If you are growing this plant in the pots, make sure that the pots receive adequate sunlight. You can also grow aloe vera at the edges of the garden and they will serve as good hedge plants. A regular inspection of aloe vera will ensure the proper growth of the plant. If you find any white colored material growing on it, dust it off immediately and spray with insecticide immediately.

Although the aloe vera plant is used for the ornamental purpose, there are several medical uses of this plant. If you have them growing in your garden, you will not need to buy any aloe vera products from the market. You can use the fresh herb grown in your own garden instead. Only you need to be a little cautious while handling the plant. For example, when you pluck a leaf do that very slowly and carefully.

Before cutting the aloe vera leaf, make sure that the knife being used is washed properly. Any infection or damage to one part of the plant can cause damage to the other parts as well. The juice of aloe vera is often used for medical purposes, so when you are cutting the leaf off, make sure to have a vessel ready so that you can put it immediately in it.

What is more, you need to save the plants from snow too. As these are warm weather plants, the snow can damage them during the winter. If the aloe vera plant is grown in pots, you can transfer the pot to a green house. After the winter season is over, you can keep it back in the original place.

When you have an aloe vera plant, make sure that you read the tips available on different website for growing these plants. Adding the right amount of water is also very important. Neither too little nor too much is the right hand rule for watering these plants. During the summer season, you can soak the entire pot in water, but make sure that the pot has a proper drainage system.

If you have grown aloe vera on the ground, you will have to make sure that there are no weeds growing around it. If you find any weeds growing around it, uproot them immediately and ensure that no trace is left.
