A hedge cutter is a gardening or agricultural tool used for trimming hedges. A hedge or hedgerow is a column of closely-spaced shrubs and trees that usually separate boundaries or act as walls or screens in your garden or the outside portion of your home. Hedges can be a more attractive alternative to a fence as a garden boundary - they add texture, character, color and lushness to your garden. Moreover, hedges conserve the environment as they provide a temporary habitat for birds and other wildlife.
Hedges, however, need to be trimmed or cut regularly, or as needed - thus the abundance of hedge cutters for sale. Cutting and trimming are forms of hedge maintenance. The amount of cutting usually depends on the age of the hedge, the species of the hedge, and your desired design or appearance of your garden.
There are manual or hand tools for cutting hedges. These include garden shears, loppers, secateurs, and bow saws. Garden shears and secateurs are ideal for cutting or pruning small hedges and bushes with thin branches.
Garden shears
These use two identical blades to cut small stems and leaves and are used like scissors. Some garden shears are jagged at the base of each blade for cutting thicker material. There are telescopic garden shears and long-handled shears for reaching higher hedges.
Secateurs
Secateurs are ideal for cutting shrubs and small trees with thicker stems or branches. There are bypass and anvil types of secateurs. Garden experts believe that the bypass type of secateurs results in a cleaner cut than the anvil variety. Over the years, secateurs have been ergonomically designed to cater to people with smaller or weaker hands. There are rotating handle designs that reduces fatigue and strain to the hands as the force is evenly spread on all the fingers.
Loppers
Loppers are a type of scissors that are usually operated using both hands. Some types have telescopic handles that can be extended to a length of 2 meters to reach high branches. Just like secateurs, the bypass type of loppers give cleaner cuts than the anvil type. Loppers are mainly used for the cutting of tree branches with diameters of less than 2 inches.
Bow Saws/Pruning Saws
Bow saws are ideal for cutting through thick branches up to several inches in diameter and getting rid of dead wood from trees and shrubs. Some manufacturers recommend the use of different blades for these purposes. There are bow saws that incorporate a hand guard to prevent soreness of the knuckles if you hit your hand on the material being sawed. A pruning saw is more ideal for cutting through cramped spaces or for reaching the crown of a tree.
Powered or Motorized Hedge Cutters
There are numerous motorized hedge cutters for sale powered by gasoline, batteries, or electricity. They come in different styles and weight, and have different features. For example, some hedge cutters do not leave debris and the cuttings can go straight to a compost heap or a collection bag.
High-performance Stihl hedge cutters for sale in various outlets and countries are excellent examples of motorized hedge cutters. The gasoline type is perfect for large parks and gardens. The low-noised electricity-run type is excellent for your home garden. There is a cordless model that runs on the latest lithium-ion battery technology with a high cutting capacity.
Tractor Hedge Cutters
There are also tractor hedge cutters for sale that are especially ideal for large gardens, parks, and large agricultural plantations. However, in choosing the appropriate type, you must consider the type of job that will be done - so you would know whether to use a semi-permanent tractor hedge cutter or a more commercial one with interchangeable heads.
