Hole's Greenhouse and Gardens is the classic story of a couple starting out with an idea of how they wanted to live and a business grew out of doing what they loved. Starting from a roadside vegetable stand in 1974, Hole's Greenhouse and Gardens, LTD has evolved into a state of the art mega faceted greenhouse operation today. The business has a strong educational and development arm. Six international companies involved in seed and plant development use Hole's Greenhouses test garden every year. The web presence of this mega nursery is as large and complex as the business itself.
Ted and Lois Hole started selling vegetables in a stand at their farm in 1974. Today Canada acknowledges Hole's Greenhouse as one of its largest gardening enterprises. The two sons, Bill and Jim, have advanced the family business in its scope and breath to incorporate all the latest, environmentally friendly techniques and equipment. The elder Hole's transferred control to their sons capable hands soon after their university degrees in agriculture were handed to them. Lois was an author, school administrator and politician until she passed away in January 2005. Ted preceded her by two years. Hole's Greenhouse has continued to carry on through the combined efforts of Bill and Jim Hole.
Hole Greenhouse and Gardens, LTD consists of six different greenhouse areas on a 2.5 hectare site in St. Albert, Canada. The indoor plant glasshouse is open to the public year round. Two hundred and fifty six square meters of indoor plants can be browsed through to select purchases from. The seasonally open area for perennials spreads over thirteen hundred meters and bedding and vegetable plants are made available in a separate thirteen hundred meter retail glasshouse. The backroom areas they call the 'growing range' and 'cold frames' areas total another ten thousand meters. A thirty nine hundred square meter roll-topped nursery stock retail area was added in 2001 to house large stock including trees, shrubs and roses.
Sharing gardening information and participation in the development of better seeds and improved varieties of plants is a key component of Hole's Greenhouse. The one and a half acre test garden on the greenhouse compound is planted with seeds and starts from six international companies each year. In this way, Hole's contributes to the addition of new and improved nursery items.
The Hole's Greenhouse website is hard for older eyes to read. The type is small and light colored. They have a lot on the page which takes some time to read through and find the various parts that you might want to look at further. The online catalog of plants and flower arrangements is just for show at this time. Of the twenty some options chosen, none were available for online ordering. The books can be ordered online.
