Hollow Tine Lawn Aerator

   (Read 500+ times)
By Patricia Wainwright

Do you ever wonder why they always say that the “grass is greener on the other side of the fence” – it’s because a hollow tine lawn aerator is used on the grass there! The hollow tine aerator allows the grass to inhale as much air and ingest as many nutrients as it needs to grow lusciously in the shade of healthy green that nature colored it with. A hollow tine aerator enables air, water, sunlight, and organic fertilizers to seep deeply into the roots of every grass in your lawn.

How Do Hollow Tine Lawn Aerators Work

Looking like a lawn mower, the hollow tine aerator facilitates the aeration of your lawn. Aeration is the process of improving the ability of your lawn to admit air into the root system of the grass. Experts say that the use of a hollow tine aerator is the best method for core aerating a lawn. It removes about 45 cores per square meter of turf, creating numerous holes all over the lawn, easing the passage of air and nutrients into the roots of the grass. Each core removed is about 12 millimeters thick and 100 millimeters long.

Why Do Lawns Need Aeration

Over time, all types of soil become compact, inhibiting the full growth potential of your grass. Nutrients are blocked from penetrating into the roots. Soils that have compacted allow the easy invasion of weeds, and make the lawn susceptible to flooding or becoming water-logged.

How Often Do Lawns Need Aeration

Aeration using a hollow tine lawn aerator is ideally done every one to three years, depending on the type of soil and grass in your lawn. Clay and heavy loam soils need to be aerated once a year because these types of soil tend to create puddles. Some types of lawn grass (bentgrass, Kentucky bluegrass, zoysia grass) tend to accumulate thatches atop the soil, preventing water to reach the topsoil.

Experts cite the fall season as generally the best time for the use of a hollow tine lawn aerator - for it is the time of the year when the grass is growing actively. Clay soil may also be aerated during springtime. Some grasses such as St. Augustine grass and zoysia grass are best aerated in late spring or early summer. In order to aerate effectively and easily, the soil should be moist but not wet. If the soil is dry, irrigate deeply one or two days before aeration.
