Home Garden Pest Control

   (Read 100+ times)
By Patricia Wainwright

You might be surprised to know that your kitchen houses some of the most effective home garden pest control products today. What may seem like banal herbs and ingredients for cooking are actually vicious enemies that pests will avoid no matter what. Of the numerous herbs and spices you see in your pantry, pepper, garlic, vegetable oil, dish washing liquid, Castor oil, peppermint oil, vinegar, coffee, and soap are home garden pest control remedies that can effectively ward off common pests like aphids, slugs, snails, spider mites, earwigs, rodents, and black spots.

Hot peppers like jalapeño are loathed by gophers, moles, marmots, and ground squirrels. By placing jalapeño peppers within 4 inches of their location, they can be kept away for quite some time. Another home garden pest control remedy that can repel bugs is pepper juice or pepper seeds soaked in water. A small amount can be coated to plants to keep them out of your crops and flowers.

Garlic is an effective home garden pest control remedy for aphids, weeds, and certain diseases. A home made spray made of garlic powder and water can burn weeds and keep pests away. Even planting garlic between rows of roses or vegetables can be effective against aphids.

Vinegar is a much stronger home garden pest control remedy than garlic. Vinegar with 11% acetic acid will not only kill the leaves but weed roots as well. Those who wish to use strong vinegar solutions will need to order from gardening centers as common commercial vinegar only has 5% acetic acid. When using the stronger version, proper handling is needed.

Vegetable oil mixed with dish washing liquid and water is also a good home garden pest control spray for aphids. A thorough spray on wet leaves can affect aphids that come in contact. Castor oil is a good repellent for rodents such as marmots while fish oil placed in shallow containers can attract earwigs and trap them. A spray bottle of 1 part peppermint oil and 10 parts water can also be used to control ants. Another option is peppermint oil saturated cotton balls. These oils, however, need to be washed off with water to prevent leaf burning.

Coffee is another effective home garden pest control remedy for slugs. Placing coffee grounds mixed with egg shells around plants will keep slugs away from crops. Also, shallow containers that are at ground level containing beer can attract snails and slugs for a couple of days.

A gallon of water mixed with 3 tablespoons of dish washing soap can also successfully control spider mites, aphids, and weeds. When used sparingly, soap can dry weeds and eventually kill them. A spray mixture of tea tree oil or liquid soap can be a useful home garden pest control remedy for black spots, weeds, and certain bugs.

Though not necessarily found in your kitchen, rubbing alcohol is another effective home garden pest control solution for whiteflies, aphids, and spider mites. Cotton balls soaked in rubbing alcohol can be applied to affected plants to stop insect infestation.

There are numerous home garden pest control remedies that are easy and accessible. Just ransack your kitchen and you’ll find helpful and cheap ingredients that are natural solutions for garden pests and diseases.
