How Fence Planters Can Add Color And Style To Your Garden

   (Read 500+ times)
By Patricia Wainwright

What are fence planters used for in the garden?

A fence planter is any kind of planter that hooks onto attaches to or hangs over the fence in your garden. They are used extensively in garden centers to create wonderful displays, but many gardeners are not sure exactly how to use them in their own garden. The seasonal surge in hanging basket trade is a delight for those in the gardening business but can be a complicated mystery for the beginner gardener. Often, the tricky nature of planting up a hanging planter means that pre-planted hanging fence planters are bought instead, and so the gardener misses out on the different styles of fence planters that are available. This is a shame as planters can create another room with your garden if chosen carefully.

What types of fence planter are there?

The basic fence planter can be a small plastic, trough, which clips over a hook screwed into the fence. It is filled with compost, usually in a liner, planted with annuals and instant color is achieved. If you have a railed deck, there are railing fence planters that sit on the railing, and you can surround your deck with scented and trailing plants; creating a delightful effect. A very traditional fence planter is the half circle lined basket, which again can be slid over a hook in the fence. Over the fence planters work in one of two ways, they either straddle the fence, the planters have a groove underneath them, or they sit on special deck or fence brackets that straddle the fence or railing. These planters can be made from plastic, cedar wood which does not rot, or metal with coir or coco linings. There are large, small, curved, straight, some with fancy scroll work, and others with discreet grooving; there are fence planters to suit all needs.

Why should you use fence planters in your garden?

If you have a small garden, with not much in the way of flower beds, fence planters add to your options. Think of your garden as a room, and fences and railings as walls. They need decorating, and that is where fence planters come in, they are the decorating tools for your outside room. They add height and interest; are great for growing trailing plants and annuals; and can be effective all year round if you plan carefully, and choose hardy evergreen perennials. You can bring a splash of color to your garden and, at the same time, hide ugly fence posts and cover up areas that have faded. Fence planters are a versatile option to add extra interest in your garden.
