How To Grow An Herb Garden

   (Read 250+ times)
By Patricia Wainwright

The process of how to grow an herb garden needs planning and answers to the following questions. What type of herb garden do you plan to grow? Do you have space for an outdoor herb garden or do you plan to grow them on containers that you can put indoors? How much care and maintenance will you be able to commit?

The first step in the process of how to grow an herb garden is deciding on which type of herbs you plant to grow. See, there are four known herb classes and they are culinary, aromatic, ornamental, and medicinal herbs. Culinary herbs, also known as cooking herbs, are the fresh or dried leaves of plants added to various recipes. Some examples include but are not limited to thyme, sage, oregano, parsley, and basil. Aromatic herbs, on the other hand, are the sources of oils for perfumes, potpourris, and other fragrant products. The most common are rosemary, and mint. Ornamentals herbs, however, have colorful flowers and foliage that can fill a room not only with beauty but with a slightly aromatic flavor. These herbs include lavender and chives. The last type, medicinal herbs, can be effective homeopathic treatments for common diseases. They can be brewed into teas or boiled into liniments to alleviate pain or provide temporary relief. Clearly, this step in the process of how to grow an herb garden does not require much effort.

When deciding how to grow an herb garden, think about where you want to grow them. Herbs are not really choosy in terms of location. They only need a lot of light, drainage, and good air circulation. You can either grow them indoors or outdoors. An outdoor herb garden, of course, will allow you to plant more varieties of cultivars. However, being outdoors, it will also attract a lot of pests and diseases and will need protection from extreme heat and cold. How to grow an herb garden outdoors? Make sure that you amend the soil with nutrients. Compost and mulch are your two best weapons. Keep an eye on your garden and make sure that your herbs get enough of what they need. The advantage of growing indoor herb gardens, on the other hand, is the control that you have over them. Not only are they free from pests and diseases, you can also give them their needed light, watering, and fertilization. How to grow an herb garden indoors? Make sure to provide an optimum growing environment of good drainage, enough moisture, and sunlight. Tips on how to grow an herb garden are quite easy to find. You only have to make sure that you are asking persons of authority to guarantee good growth and health to you herbs.

How to grow an herb garden can be a question of how far you’re willing to go to get to know these herbs and their behavior. The time, effort, and costs they will require depends on the choices that you make from the first day you plan to grow your own herb garden.
