One of the highlights of the summer season is the harvest of berries. Of all berries, raspberries are maybe the easiest to look after and the ones which yield the most berries. In order to have o good crop, however, it is necessary to learn how to plant raspberries in order to get the maximum out of every plant. There are certain aspects of raspberry-growing that you need to know to ensure success.
The most important thing you should know about how to plant raspberries, is that raspberries are plants that will produce fruit the second year after planting. The first year they will flower, but no fruit will form. The second year, they will produce the fruit, and then the plants will die. Bear this in mind, then, when you are planning your planting scheme. You will need to replant stalks every year to ensure a crop every summer, and it will be necessary to wait for two years to finally harvest your own raspberries.
So, then, how do you start? In order to learn how to plant raspberries efficiently, read on. The first thing to do is to find a spot in your garden that is in the full sun. Raspberries need as many as 6 to 8 hours of direct sunlight per day in order to produce a quality crop. Try to choose a spot that is also a bit sheltered from the wind, if possible. You can either tie the canes to a trellis or other structure in your garden, or plant them in the open and tie them to poles. You need to secure these poles firmly to the ground before planting the canes; otherwise you could damage the roots, which are quite superficial. You must buy healthy canes, from an established nursery, and plant them about 20 inches apart, in order to allow for future growth. Also remember that you will need to plant new stalks the following year, so leave room for them as well.
Raspberries need well- drained, quite acid soil. Acidity can be incorporated by adding lots of organic material to the soil. Compost, grass cuttings, manure and many other organic fertilizers will help you to achieve this. Once the soil is well-amended, the actual planting must take place. Make sure you do not plant the canes too deeply in the soil. Raspberry roots are quite superficial, and you could cause a lot of damage if you planted them too deep. Cover the roots with a maximum of three inches of soil, pat down the soil around the cane, and water. Remember raspberries need lots of water, so be sure to water them regularly.
