How to Pick an Eco-friendly Plant©

   (Read 50+ times)
By Arlene Wright Correll

Just what the heck are Eco-friendly plants? I suppose one can come up with lots of answers and they will all be correct in this day and age because Eco-friendly is a whole new ball game, being written as we read here. It is like the computer age, changing faster than a speeding bullet.

I think one of the things one can determine about an Eco-Friendly plant is when one goes to one’s favorite nursery one should go to a nursery that grows its plants in a biodegradable paper sleeve and that sleeve should be filled with a good soil-less growing media. Why a paper sleeve? Well a paper sleeve will allow water, air and the plant’s roots to penetrate the sleeve and you can plant the whole thing and the sleeve will break down in the garden as the plant grows. No plastic buckets or pots to add to our ever growing dumps!

As a gardener one can buy these sleeves to start one’s own plants from seed and in the event one is going into the business of selling plants whether to garden centers or at a farmer’s market then being able to say your plants are Eco-friendly may help the buyers who are going green to choose your stock over your competitors stock.

For your home you may want to consider a snake plant or a spider plant as a decoration as they are really eco-friendly plants because they require almost no care and help to clean the air in your home.

Rosemary, thyme, basil and oregano grown on a sunny window sill in your home will provide you with some wonderful fresh herbs to cook with and brighten your window sill and home.

Eco-friendly plants are also local plants that will grow and survive in your planting zone.

Deciduous trees are considered to be Eco-Friendly because they are leafy in the warm weather causing you to have more shade and use less air conditioning and because they grow big and once they lose their leaves they will still block a lot of wind and cause you to use less heat in the winter.

As we decide to help keep our planet in balance we must do more research on how to become “greener” and how to find out more about Eco-friendly plants. It is up to each of us to start with ourselves to create a ripple effect that will grow and grow until we are all on the same Eco-friendly sheet of music!
