If you are like me, you love to keep your lawn in good shape. It is not a matter of keeping up with the Joneses, the Smiths, the Kowalskis, Lees, Hwangs, or anybody. For me it is a matter of being a good steward over the land in my care. One of the issues that comes up every year is that of spreading seed to flesh out thinning areas and also using fertilizer. What is nice is that you can often use the same spreader for both of these items. However, how do you choose the right spreader?
The answer is incredibly simple. You need to consider size of your lawn and size of your pocketbook.
LAWN SIZE
If your lawn is huge, you most likely want to choose a wheeled spreader with a large-capacity bucket. Be sure to choose one that has an adjustable opening, so that it will be versatile enough for both seeds and fertilizer. On the other hand, if your lawn is small, you may not want to get a bulky item like a wheeled spreader. So go ahead and get one of those smaller ones that you hold with one hand and spin the distributing wheel with the other. Most of these are easily adjustable, but they can get tiring if your lawn is big. So be realistic about what pains you are willing to take with your spreader.
POCKETBOOK SIZE
As you might guess, the larger, wheeled spreaders are more expensive than the smaller models. So basically, if your lawn is big and your pocketbook can take the hit, you want to get one of these. This will save your arms, because using the smaller models can get very tiring. Think tennis elbow and wrist, on both arms. However, your pocketbook might be less resilient, like mine. If this is the case, stick to the smaller spreader and maybe divide your large lawn into smaller chunks that you do each day for a week. You might be able to avoid the stiff wrists this way.
All-in-all, the most important thing is to get a spreader. These beauties distribute seed and fertilizer at a spectacular rate. And they keep it even so you don't get huge forests of grass next to small, sad brown patches. Spring is nearly here, so keep your eyes open for the spreader that speaks to you!
