Improving Clay Soil

   (Read 100+ times)
By Patricia Wainwright

Improving clay soil can be a daunting task. If you are having problems with this sticky and unworkable soil, then read on. Many gardeners have problems with drainage when it come to clay soil. Clay soil is comprised of tiny, flat particles that can tightly compact together and it creates a hard pan surface. Improving clay soil under these conditions can seem impossible. But, there are 3 amendments that the home gardener can use to improve clay soil in the garden and overcome the frustration that comes with a clay soil environment. These three elements are compost, course sand and gypsum. Let's begin by taking a look at compost.

Compost is also known as organic mater. Organic matter is any decayed material that comes from a once-living organism. This all purpose humus material is rich in nutrients and not only adds to the mineral quality of the soil, but compost will also be quite useful in improving clay soil 's physical nature. Cover your gardening area with three to four inches of compost. Continue to work the humus into the top six inches of the soil. The next step is adding the sand.

The best type of sand to use for improving clay soil is the course or granular variety. Course sand can also be referred to as builder's sand. This type of sand is a much better option than the fine sand. Apply the sand over the mixed clay soil and compost. You will want to cover the same area as the compost. Mix in the sand. If you have a tiller, it will make the mixing job easier.

Last but not least is the adding of gypsum also referred to as gypsite. This versatile soil amendment can be used year round. If you are truly concerned about improving clay soil, gypsum is a must. Gypsum enters the tiny clay particles and creates pockets of moisture and air, which loosens the soil and makes it easier for you to manipulate. Again spread the gypsum over your gardening area. A lawn spreader will help with the even distribution. To activate the gypsum, water right after the application.

So there you have it. This recipe for improving clay soil is an effective one. Remember, your three key ingredients - compost, course sand and gypsum. These three additions to a clay soil garden can make a gardener's life much easier. When it comes to improving clay soil, patience and dedication is a must. However, you can have a beautiful thriving garden in no time with a little work. So, roll up the sleeves and get to work. And, in no time your concerns about improving clay soil will be a thing of the past and you will be relaxing with a nice cup of tea admiring your beautiful thriving garden.
