Indoor Growing Systems

   (Read 500+ times)
By Patricia Wainwright

So you fancy growing some plants, herbs, maybe a few vegetables; but, your apartment has one small balcony and you don’t see yourself as an allotment sort of person? You can grow an amazing amount indoors if you buy the right indoor growing system. One type of indoor growing is known as hydroponics, no soil, just water, devised by NASA to work on spaceships!

Why use an indoor growing system?

It is not just a matter of space; certain plants don’t do well in some climates and are impossible to grow outside. There are other advantages to using indoor growing systems too; you can select clean soil, you add exactly the right amount of nutrient, you don’t worry whether it rains or not, you supply your plants with exactly the right level of water and they grow better than outside. While your plants are growing indoors you get the benefit of their beauty; they become a living feature of your home. So, now you need to consider which type of indoor growing system to choose.

Different types of indoor growing systems

One way of growing herbs, vegetables and greens indoors is using aeroponics; a dirt-free growing method in which plant roots are suspended in air within a highly oxygenated growing chamber with 100% humidity. They are fed measured nutrients and water and suspended above is the high efficiency grow light system that switches on and off automatically. A do it yourself, more basic hydroponics system is either a wick system; a hole cut in the bottom of the pot , a wick inserted and the wick then put in water; or a drip feed system. Here the plant sits directly in a pan filled with water and the nutrients in a reservoir below are pumped up and then distributed by drip feed to each plant. Above your plants you would need to set up a bank of grow lights.

Choosing the best indoor growing systems

If you remember growing cress seeds on blotting paper or cotton wool, this is probably the simplest way to grow plants and eminently suitable for young children. If you want to be more adventurous, then look at the starter hydroponics kits available; they cost from around $50 for the lights on a rack and then around $70 for the drip water irrigation system. This will allow you to grow a fairly large number of plants. If you want an all in one solution then the award winning aero-garden is the simplest one to buy at around $100 but you will be limited as to how much you can grow. This is a very low maintenance type of all the indoor growing systems.
