Indoor Vegetable Gardening

   (Read 500+ times)
By Patricia Wainwright

Indoor vegetable gardening is a fun and novel way to grow vegetables. There are many advantages to this type of gardening. First, you are not exposed to the harsh sun making it less stressful for you to tend your plants. Another is that indoor vegetable gardening can be less physically strenuous to you, which can be particularly helpful when you have problems with mobility. You can place vegetables high up so that you won’t need to bend down to water or tend to them.

What you would also find pleasing with indoor vegetable gardening is that you would do less weeding if any at all. It is also possible to start planting during cool seasons with this gardening style since vegetables would be shielded from the cold.

When you are doing this kind of gardening, one of the first things that you should look at is plant containers. You can virtually use any type of plant container, however what’s crucial is that each should have a hole for drainage. If you are using a metal or plastic pot, you can use an ice pick to puncture a hole in the bottom of the container.

Plastic pots are relatively inexpensive compared to other containers but they can easily get hot, which is one of the reasons why they are not that popular among indoor vegetable gardening enthusiasts. The preferred container material of indoor gardeners is ceramic since it won’t absorb heat easily. You can find a lot of pots of this material available in indoor gardening supplies stores.

One of the more valuable indoor vegetable gardening tips is not to pack soil in containers too tightly. The rule is to pack them loosely. This is because if a soil is too compact, roots would not be able to spread out easily. Also make sure to leave one to two inches on the top of the container when packing soil for watering.

Some people want to accelerate the growth of their vegetables and for this reason they use an indoor vegetable gardening lighting system. To save up on utility bills, it is advisable that you get a LED lighting system. They may be relatively expensive to acquire at first, but they can pay themselves off in the long run because they have a long lifespan. Also they are very safe to use since they are not hot to the touch when turned on. Still, the use of artificial lights is not yet that common in indoor vegetable gardening due to high start-up costs.
