If you are tired of spending hours and hours watering your garden, it is time to consider installing a good irrigation system, which will not only save you time, but money and a lot of headaches as well. Irrigation systems are quite easy to install on your own, without specialized help. However, in order to get maximum benefits from it, you need to know the basics of irrigation system design so that every corner of your garden, every precious plant is covered and can get the water it needs.
A good irrigation system design should take into consideration the climate, which affects the water needs of your plants, as well as the plants themselves. Some irrigation systems consist of a punctured hose that allows water to drip (this is why they are called drip irrigation systems). More sophisticated irrigation systems include sprinklers, which come out of the soil, water, and go back into the soil so that they are concealed when not in use. Other systems are a mixture of the two.
If you are going to carry out the irrigation system design on your own, you should consider, first of all, where the water will be coming from. A tap outside your home is ideal, so first of all, make sure you have such a source of water, and that it works properly. Once you have decided where your irrigation system will start, you need to calculate the route the hose will have, making sure every plant is covered. There are accessories that allow you to make the hose go up (for example if, in a given section, you need to water plants in pots or plants that are in planters attached to the walls. Once you have been able to picture the route and it is clear in your head, the best thing to do is to take it to paper. Draw a plan of your garden; double-check your irrigation system design to see if there are problems. Once you cover the whole route (you can mark it with a piece of yarn, or even an old hose, or, if you prefer, you can take the measurements based on your drawing of your garden) it is time to measure. Measure the amount of hose or yarn you used. Measure how many centimetres it takes up in your plan and calculate how much you will need from there. Your irrigation system design will be complete, and ready to serve as the basis for your work. Having an irrigation system design fresh in your mind before buying the components and installing it will make it easier to do adjustments or last-minute changes.
A good irrigation system design will also include a timer, in order to water plants in a regular way. It can also include a pump if water pressure in your area can be an issue, and sprinklers, which have different shapes in order to accompany the shape of your borders. Finally, remember that having a good irrigation system design in the first place will ensure you can do the buying and installation without hitches. Try doing your own irrigation system design!
