Kitchen gardening involves the growing of fruits and vegetables in your garden for consumption. Aesthetics also play a role in this type of gardening. Just like any garden, you would want your kitchen garden to be beautiful and aesthetically pleasing since it would be part of your home. In kitchen garden design, there are several factors you need to consider such as fencing, climate, and type of seeds to use, among others.

The size of the area in your property that you can allot to kitchen gardening is a good guide on what possible kitchen garden design ideas you can use and apply. There are many design possibilities for kitchen gardens, regardless of size.

Another factor that you should take into consideration when designing a kitchen garden is the amount of sun the designated area gets. Fruits and vegetables which are mainstays in kitchen gardens require adequate amounts of direct sun exposure. Be sure that your proposed area gets ample sun exposure throughout the day to ensure that your garden will thrive and flourish.

In kitchen garden design, plant type and variety is also important. It is not recommended that you choose a plant for your kitchen garden just because it is easy to grow and maintain. After all, one of the primary intents as to why you would have such garden is so to have a supply of produce that you can cook and eat. Choose plants or fruits that you would most likely use on a regular basis. Examples would be herbs, tomatoes, and lemon trees.

Another variable that is important in kitchen garden design is variety. Grow small amounts of one plant variety in your garden. Variety would ensure that you would have a semblance of balance in your garden.

Fencing is also an important factor in kitchen garden design. Install fencing around your plants to protect them from pests and marauding animals. Label your plants so that you would be able to identify them easily. For plants with vines such as tomatoes, install necessary supporting structures such as trellises.

Another thing that you should incorporate into your kitchen garden design is sections. Create a seating area in your garden so that you would be able to view your creation and work. Allot a small space in your garden where your children can play or frolic. As much as possible avoid planting in rows. This type of planting technique is typically reserved for farm lands and is not ideal for home gardens.
