Kwanzan Cherry Tree

   (Read 500+ times)
By Patricia Wainwright

The Kwanzan Cherry Tree is a tree that is native to Japan and is known to produce “double” pink leaves. On the other hand, they do not produce fruits or berries. It is the hardiest of all cherry tree species and can reach up to 25 feet in height at full maturity.

The Kwanzan Cherry Tree typically produces clusters of 3-5 flowers that are thick and resembles carnations. The Kwanzan Flowering Cherry Tree will start blooming in April but it would also look majestic in fall when its leaves take on a copper hue. In landscaping it can be used as a shade tree in patios, small spaces and even in residential streets. Its trunk would shoot up straight and not droop. On the other hand, the Kwanzan Cherry Tree’s bark is thin and can easily be damaged.

It is very easy to grow and thrives in soils that are loose, moist and well-drained. It also prefers direct sun exposure than shade. It is moderately tolerant of drought and aerosol salt. Kwanzan cherry trees however would not respond well in soil with a high salt content.

There are a number of known Kwanzan cherry tree problems. Stress is a variable that a Kwanzan Cherry Tree is not known to handle well as well as pollution. That is why it is not advisable that you plant them in places with a lot of vehicular traffic or in industrial areas that have smoke spewing plants.

They are also known to be prone to pest infestation. This is the reason why it is not recommended that you plant them in an exposed street or urban parking lot where they can be attacked by borers. Other examples of insects and pests that can harm the Kwanzan Cherry Tree are aphids (which could block new growth), spider mites (which can cause yellowing or stippling), and tent caterpillars (which makes large nests in the trees and also eats foliage). It is for these reasons that the Kwanzan cherry tree is not known to live long. This tree’s typical lifespan is from 15 to 25 years.

To protect your Kwanzan cherry tree from pests, it is recommended that you apply insecticide on the trunk when you see signs of infestation. Spraying on the trunk should be done from the soil line to the scaffold. Use a generous amount of insecticide, such that after you’re done applying, a liquid pool would collect on the bottom of the tree.
